Costa Sunglasses' Style Meets Sustainability
Costa del Mar – affectionately known as Costa – has been crafting top-quality sunglasses since 1983, when Ray Ferguson designed the first pair in Daytona Beach, Florida. Costa has long been recognized for its contributions to environmental causes – and this fall, they’ve announced another eco-friendly venture: a new line of eyeglass frames fashioned from recycled fishing nets. Seamless, sleek, and ever modern, Costa’s pioneering design represents a fusion of contemporary style alongside environmental awareness and appreciation.
Costa’s new frames continue a longstanding relationship with Bureo, a company that works in collaboration with fishing companies to effectively recycle discarded nylon fishing nets. Last spring, Costa released limited edition Untangled sunglasses, which also harness recycled nylon in their frames. Costa’s innovative, eco-friendly designs feature PLUSfoam® Hydrolite® rubber, another recycled material— and the result is a wholly sustainable design that can be easily recycled at the end of its product life. Used frames are shipped back to the PLUSfoam® team, who repurpose the materials from there. Costa’s optical cases, soft pouches, and cork cases are biodegradable, too.
Protecting the Planet, One Frame At A Time
Costa’s innovative team is committed to putting our waterways first. For thirty-five years, the company has produced optical accessories designed to protect our eyes – and preserve our waters, too. The company’s Bio-Resin Demo Lens Program, for example, was devised to eliminate demo lens waste – the biggest waste culprit in the optical world. Costa uses bio-resin demo lenses, which are derived from recyclable, biodegradable, plant-based cornstarch. John Sanchez, Costa’s Vice President of Product Design, explains that “the Costa Optical Untangled Collection offers eyeglass wearers a trendy performance frame,” adding that all materials are responsibly sourced. “We ask [our customers] to join our commitment to protect what’s out there,” Sanchez adds proudly.
Durability Meets Style: The Untangled Collection 100
Available in a classic rectangular eye shape, the Untangled Collection 100 features textured, recycling nylon on the brow bar and temples, with a choice of three colorways for the glasses’ adjustable, stainless steel metal bridge, lower rim, and front temple. Colorways boast PLUSform® Hydrolite® rubber on the temple tips, which makes for a sleek, modern look and just a hint of color. Colorway combinations are available in Matte Black metal with gray rubber template grips, Shiny Brushed Light Gunmetal with royal blue rubber temple grips, and Matte Brushed Gold metal with burgundy rubber temple grips.
For Feminine Elegance, Look No Further: The Untangled Collection 110
For a feminine, cat-eye style, the Untangled Collection 110 delivers. Pops of color at the temple tips alongside textured, recycled nylon accents deliver a uniquely elegant design. Colored PLUSfoam® Hydrolite® rubber comes paired with one of three colorways of stainless steel: Customers can choose between Shiny Brushed Gold metal with teal rubber temple grips, Matte Brushed Rose Gold metal with red rubber temple grips, or Matte Brushed Light Gunmetal with royal blue rubber temple grips.
Available October 1, 2018, the Costa Optical Untangled Collection styles have a suggested retail price at $220.
